The human person is a unity. Through the years we all have been brainwashed with the idea that a human being consists of different “parts” like the body, the soul and the spirit. Although many Christian believers try to find this philosophical idea in Scripture, it is not there – and I know all those verses that are normally quoted, quite well. Fact is that the individual is an unity with many different facets like a diamond which has many sides, each beautiful when correctly cut, but it is only one in essence. According to the story in the book of Genesis, God did not create a body and afterwards added a spirit or soul – He created a man and blew life into him.
Specialists. One outflow of this philosophical viewpoint was that people were taught that there should be a specialist for each of these “parts”: the doctor must heal the body, the psychologist the mind or soul, and the minister or pastor must make sure that somebody goes to heaven! Of course these people do a very important work and are there to help the client with information and additional treatment. The title “doctor” comes from the Latin word meaning ”teacher”; this is in reality the work of the specialists in the different fields of healing or wellness – clients should be taught how to care for themselves and only supply remedies when necessary.
Self-care as a responsibility. We were created in such a way that the body (in broader sense actually the whole person) has the innate power to heal itself optimally when given the correct aids for growth and repair. It is each individual’s responsibility to care for the total person and this responsibility cannot be transferred to someone else. Each one of us should: 1) strive for perfect peace of mind; 2) enhance a positive attitude and thoughts; 3) give the body the needed nutrients; 4) avoid all poisonous substances; 5) be active with constructive work; 6) rest and sleep to help the body repair itself; 7) exercise the many muscles. These aspects are our duty, especially when we believe that our bodies are temples of God’s Spirit. The ultimate result is wellness: feeling well in all aspects of life and experiencing quality of life – which is our Creator’s will for us.
